In this upcoming Sunday’s Gospel from Matthew 14:22–33, Peter starts to sink when he takes his eyes off Jesus and focuses on the storm around him.
I have done the same thing many times, but especially lately. I have worried about work, about my children, and about things happening in the world that could affect my family, my finances, and the future. In some cases, I have had a little influence over the outcome. In others, none at all. But worrying, losing sleep, and running every possible scenario through my hamster-wheel-of-a-mind mind has never changed the situation. When Peter’s wet-head started spinning he finally did the only thing that mattered. He cried out, “Lord, save me.”
That is where I keep coming back to the words of the Divine Mercy prayer: Jesus, I trust in You. I may not be able to control the storm, but I can choose where I place my trust.
